The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

It is by far judged one of the most admired movies of Hollywood. It is the story of Andy Dufrense (Tim Robbins) was sentenced for the murder of his wife and her lover. However, only Andy knows the truth of that fateful day. He is jailed at Shawshank Jail, where he develops strong bond with Red (Morgan Freeman), a fellow prisoner. Story deals with the lives of prisoners, regarding the stories of their one deviation and consequent realisation of truth. Movie has a strong script and skilled editorship. Movie has some fantastic life lessons and twists. A must watch movie.

Cast Away (2000)

This movie is emotion. This movie is remembered for the acting of the Legend Tom Hanks (played Chuck Noland). Story is all about, the endless struggle to survive, hope to regain which is almost lost, a man’s quest to be alive with every passing day. Movie has his own twist and turns and at the end of the movie, you will realize the real lost a survivor can bear with. It will remain with you for a very long time.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump is a character, not many come across in their lifetime. Gump, born and brought up by a single mother is autistic child but a devout believer of life’s basic ethics. These ordinary virtues had turned him in an unusual personality. Movie runs on the shoulders of Tom Hanks. His acting will make you engrossed in his journey. Excellent portrayal of a disciplined yet delinquent Forrest will remain etched in your mind. A movie that motivates several generations, must be watched before you die.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is a fantastic film. It’s filled with interesting action, great and naturally clever dialogue, and memorable characters. Also, the acting is always something to behold as by turns straightforward, loud, subtle, and just downright menacing and hits bull’s eye. Movie is spot on Quentin directorial hallmark, as he makes his choices in pacing with shots in unconventional ways but never in a way that would be distracting.

Samuel L. Jackson has given a superlative performance. John Travolta, Uma Thurmon has given their best. This movie will be a clear choice for a movie buff.

Django Unchained (2012)

Great ensemble of extraordinary performances is true explanation for the movie. Jamie Foxx has played Django. Film is based on the time of English rules of slavery. Movie proceeds with partnership between doctor turned bounty hunter and Django. Doctor played by Christoph Waltz is excellent. Slave Django helps Doctor in uncovering the wanted criminals in pursuit of bounty in turn of his freedom. Django is in search of his wife who is also a slave. Jamie Foxx has stylized Django avatar in a perfect way. Leonardo DiCaprio is also exceptional in the role of slave trader. This movie is hallmark work of Quentin Tarentino.

The Titanic (1997)

Titanic is iconic romantic movie. Treasured by the excellent performances of Kate Winslate and Leonardo DiCaprio, Titanic won Oscar too. Story of a humble artist lad and a royal aristocratic girl bloomed in extravagant luxurious cruise ship. Ship sank due to unfortunate accident but love story of Rose rose very high. This movie is work of beautiful cinematography and extraordinary performances.

The Godfather (Part I 1972 and Part II 1974)

The Godfather is masterpiece of Hollywood. Performance by Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan are gritty and cherished by the industry over all. This is the story of Mafia Lord and his family crime syndicate. Dominance of Marlon Brando is palpable in all the frames in the part I. Al Pacino in the second part has just filled the void of Brando. This movie has a huge fan base. A must watch movie for tenacious dialogue delivery and oozing performances.

Inception (2010)

This is a science fiction movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Movie’s subject is a bit intriguing. A bunch of thieves steal corporate secrets through dream piracy. Dream science played a vital role in the memory.  Leo has done fantastic work in the movie.

Interstellar (2014)

Writer and Director: Christopher Nolan

Movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain.  A team of explorers travel through blackhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival. Movie explores very interesting yet unanswered truth of space. Dimension of time twisted the end of the movie. Excellent performance has made the movie a science-fiction epic. Nolan’s work has stamp on each and every frame. A must watch.

Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Writers: Thomas Harris (novel), Ted Tally (screenplay)

Jodie Foster played a young F.B.I. cadet was given an assignment to receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. Movie has his own thrills and chills. Hopkins made the role memorable. Jodie is excellent in his role. Movie is perky and fast paced.

The Scindler’s List (1993)

Director: Steven Spielberg

Writers: Thomas Keneally (book), Steven Zaillian (screenplay)

Movie has tragic storyline of Nazi atrocities In German-occupied Poland during World War II. In the situation of persecution of Jews, an industrialist Oskar Schindler (played by Liam Neeson) gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce. Spielberg has given shine to the movie with moving emotions. Ben Kingley has also given a fantastic performance.

The Fight Club (1999)

Director: David Fincher

Writers: Chuck Palahniuk (novel), Jim Uhls (screenplay)

An insomniac office worker played by Edward Norton and a devil-may-care soapmaker (Brad Pitt) form an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more. Movie is psychopathic thriller with an entirely shocking ending. A treat for the movie buffs.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Heath Ledger made the role of Joker memorable. When the Joker started threatening and wreaking havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman (Christian Bale) must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. Heath has managed to portray the role filled with gore and violence in a manner that it became prodigy for years to come. A character that made an entire society, negative must be appreciated by watching the movie.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Director: Steven Spielberg  Writer: Robert Rodat

Captain Miller played by Tom Hanks will remain etched in your mind for years. Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers lead by Captain Miller, go behind enemy lines to retrieve Ryan whose brothers have been killed in action. Movie has his own share of emotions and war psychology. Captain Miller and his group will remind you that a war is not fought only on the borders but it banes in your mind and emotion also. Tom Hanks is super as usual. Movie should be in your list of weekend tasks.
