  1. Godaan

This is the forever best novel by the great Indian story teller Munshi Premchand. The novel is based in pre independence period near the year of 1936, the era was marred by the moneylenders those had ruined the life of poor farmers through the vicious cycle of petty loans. This is the story of a lifetime. Main cast is Hori (a farmer) and his family. Beautifully and accurately writing is the main attraction. Premchand has created such a stunning image of reality of that period that you will start living with Hori and will start feeling the pain of common man. Village and City life is also compared through different characters and stories. A must read novel. You will get the real essence of true Indian culture and milieu.

  • Chitralekha

This novel is written by Bhagwati Charan Verma. First published in 1934, This is a story of philosophy of life. Subject of the novel delves Love, hate, fate and sins. Story of widow named Chitralekha and her tryst with destiny, how her life turned upside down when she became Society Dancer. This books has it all. A must have book.

  • Divya

This is the book by Yashpal. This is the story of a woman named Divya. although Yashpal’s Divya is story of woman of GUPT period, where different discriminations had divided the society, however, that perception towards woman is still relevant. Working women, homemaker lady, teenage girl, bonded labourer you can relate with Divya anytime. A must read for everyone. Philosophy of Life is presented by Yashpal in a beautiful manner.  Yashpal has recreated the Gupta period through his meticulously chosen vocabulary. Classial hindi enthrals here.

  • Gaban

Again a beautiful book by Great Indian Storyteller, Munshi Premchand. You will love the way he used weave each and every scene of story. This is the story of a common man’s aspirations and the harsh reality of present world. Premchand never disappoints you on the ground Morals. He will keep you on the correct thinking as well as practical approach towards life.

  • Aapka bunty

Story of Child named Bunty, beautifully written by Mannu Bhandari. Bunty is a 4 year child of a single mother Shakun. Story advances with innocence of Bunty and his loving mother Shakun. As story preceded relationship between mother and child was tested by the high waters of social dilemma. Shakun dilemma towards settled life and Bunty is possessiveness for his mother has been beautifully narrated by Bhandari. Boys consummate innocence will frequent moist your eyes. This is rare gem by erudite writer.

  • Raag darbari

Unmatched gross yet excellent novel by Sri Lal Shukla published in 1968 later on awarded by Sahitya Academy in 1969. Real dehati flavour mixed with humour and cult sarcasm. One of the finest hindi literature by Sri Lal Shukla. Politics, caste clashes, human emotions all are in abundant in this saga of village Shivpalganj. Often referred as dystopian in his nature, this novel is still underrated. A must read.

  • Kashi ka Assi

If you are fond of UP and more often loved the raw nature of Kashi, you will find this story very relevant and absurdly relatable. Main character is Kashi City and the dialect of the Kashi. Writer Kashi Nath Singh has based his story on Assi Mohalla of Kashi where charm of Bhagwan Shiv can never fade away. No this is not a mythological read; Mr. Singh is narrating and at times Kashi itself as a city is narrating his own Kisse and Kahani. You will love this book that published in 2004.

  • Baanbhatt ki aatmakatha

This novel is historical fiction. Writer is Hindi literatures legendary critique Sri Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. Originally published in 1946, it is story of classical poet Baanbhatt. In this novel Hero is not only a poet but a fighter, visionary. Story based in Gupta period. Writer will take you the tour of that period through the emotions and classical vocabulary. This story is engrossing and you will feel the richness of hindi language. Hazari Prasad Dwivedi is very capable writer. It will prove to be worthy read.

  • Tamas

Written by Bhishm Sahani, story will give you chilling accounts of Indo-Pak partition. Truly a reality bite, novel was published in 1973 and got Sahitya Academy award in 1976. Story engulfs life of five days of partition. How the partition had devoured the humanity and segregated the human beings as herds of religion. Very moving and psychological presentation made this book a gem of the hindi literature.

  • Manas Ka Hans

Author of this book is Mr. Amrit Lal Nagar. This is fictional biography of Goswami Tulsidas, published in 1972. This story is very relatable and will make you fan of Tulsi das. His struggle will make you his fan. His story is motivational and inspiring. A must read.

  • Yayati

This book was originally published in Marathi written by Sri Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar and translation of hindi is also very popular. The book got Sahitya Academy and Gyanpeeth Award. this book gives the story of Raja Yayati, a generous mythological kings of Mahabharat period. It depicts the humans unending quest of aspirations. Best books to develop the understanding of human tendancies and their consequences.

  • Mrityunjay

Originally published (1967) in Marathi by the author Sri Shivaji Sawant, later on published in Hindi. This story is based on mythological character of Karn, The cursed warrior of Mahabharat period. All the facets of his personality and character are beautifully recreated by the author. This book is must read, this will give enormous narration to ponder over.
